From the galleries to the street: Papergirl NY debuts in NYC

August22

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Readers of this little blog,

It’s that time of year again, where I get involved with another project to invite you all to. This time I invite you to the opening of the exhibition for Papergirl NY. A project that started in Berlin and now is spreading around the world like the iphone. In it’s simplicity, we collected art from over 100 artists (from 10 countries), we display the art in three galleries and then ride around the city on bicycles giving out the art to people on the streets for free! It’s random acts of art kindness or in it’s simplest form street art.
Opening Night is Tuesday August 24th from 5p to 9p at Dumbo Art Center featuring over 100 pieces of art from artists near and far, drinks and cupcakes donated by Le Petit Cupcakery.
More details are here

Dumbo Art Center

And if you miss the opening but still want to see ALL THE ART you can get a second chance at The Armory over the weekend.

New York then and Now

March3

Do you walk around your neighborhood and find yourself nostalgic for that old favorite  bar, restaurant, coffee shop or  venue where you saw _______ band or ______ comedian for the first time. I do. Do you often wonder what your Grandpa or Grandma would say of that same neighborhood? I do.

Gallery Bar, another venue that doubles as an art gallery by day, lounge by night, unveils Sampling and Revisions: The L.E.S. deframed. This exhibit curated by Zoe Lukow opens tonight, March 3rd till March 24th and commemorates the neighborhood history through photographs of then and now.

Gallery Bar is located at 120 Orchard Street, north of Delancey.

What do Art Basel, The Rascal House and me have in common?

December1

Rascal House

When I think Miami, I think of that time I almost chocked to death over a giant french fry at The Rascal House, the 5 bucks my Great Grandma used to sneak me when my parent’s weren’t looking AND ART BASEL!

Although I’m scheduled to head down to Florida later in the month, if you’re about to head down or if you from the area here is a list of events going on around Miami. P.S. The original Rascal House is closed, all the Grandmas and Grandpa’s will have to steal rolls from another dining establishment.

Listing is courtesy of Danger List since I’m too tired tonight to actually do any research for you myself.

Thursday : The Riot Temple at Scope Art Fair
TheDanger is producing the entrance piece to the Scope Art Fair.  The work
is the full version of The Riot Temple, a visceral exploration of worship
& violence.  Scope is again teamed with Art Asia to present 70 galleries
and hundreds of artists.  From what we’ve seen during setup, much of the
work is amazing.  Details on Scope and The Riot Temple are at:
http://www.theriottemple.com/

Thursday: Wynwood Walls
While in the Wynwood district, check out the Deitch Projects presentation
of Wynwood Walls.  Fifteen influential artists from Asia, Europe, Latin
America and the United States have been invited to create outdoor murals
on the warehouse walls of Miami’s Wynwood Art District.  Including
artists: Aiko from Japan, Os Gemeos and Nunca from Brazil, Stelios
Faitakis from Greece, and Jim Drain, Shepard Fairey, Futura, Barry McGee,
Ara Peterson, Clare Rojas, Kenny Scharf and the team of Swoon, David Ellis

noon to 5pm, with the Opening Reception / Party following that evening
from 7pm - 11pm.  The exhibition is located at: The Moore Building/Miami
Design District - 4040 NE 2nd Avenue, Suite 103, Miami.
Friday : Creative Time presents: The New Oceanfront
The new Oceanfront area in Collins Park has been created as a platform for
virtually all of Art Basel Miami Beach’s cultural programming. Situated
directly beside the beach, the Oceanfront marks the point where the
artworld interfaces with the broader public.  Free of any admission charge
the project is located at Collins Park, between 21st and 22nd Streets.
Details can be found at: http://www.creativetime.org/

Friday Night : Fountain Party
Fountain Miami, is an independent alternative to art fairs held concurrent
with Art Basel Miami Beach and features work from many of our favorite
Brooklyn based galleries.  Friday night is their party night with the
galleries open and music by G.Love and David Katz.  More information can
be found at: http://www.fountainexhibit.com/

Saturday : Art Basel
With so much happening in Miami this week it’s easy to overlook the art
fair central to it all: Art Basel.  However, experiencing the diversity of
work presented by the worlds top galleries is an incredible experience,
even for art cynics.  Art Basel happens at the Miami Beach Convention
Center.

PICTURE YOURSELF…at MOMA Wed November 11th at 7:30p

October29

A few years back I accompanied a friend to one of these Poprally events. Why haven’t I gone back since? Oh yeah, the last time I wanted to go to a show it was sold out! So I’m getting my ticket early this time!

MOMA

PopRally presents an exclusive after-hours viewing of the exhibition New Photography 2009: Walead Beshty, Daniel Gordon, Leslie Hewitt, Carter Mull, Sterling Ruby, Sara VanDerBeek. Using digital photo-booth technology, guests can also construct their own take-away photographs using backgrounds newly designed by Gordon, Hewitt, and VanDerBeek. Music is provided by Andrew Kuo. Creative dress is encouraged.

Mixing Art & Technology Since 1997: Eyebeam Open Studios 10/23-10/24

October20

If I were to create an interactive digital exhibition I would call it “Slipping Through The Cracks” and it  would be about me, technophonbia and adaptation. Don’t get me wrong. I love technology but somehow I always ended up getting by with a paper and pen instead of a keyboard and code.  As my interest in technology grows, I see what’s out there and I see there is so much possibility.  The number of people working on interesting projects combining art, video, technology and gadgetry continues to grow.

Thanks to the good folks over at EYEBEAM, I can get a look at what some of these artists are working on this weekend. Maybe I can even have them explain things to me really really slowly.

Where The Wild Things WEEK! NYC 10/12-10/16 .

October5

where_the_wild_things_are

Let the wild rumpus begin! I’m just going to directly cut and past this from NYCGO. Awesome event for old and young lovers of my favorite book of all time.

New York is going wild! In anticipation of the premiere of Spike Jonze’s film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, the five boroughs will channel the imaginative spirit of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book to help New Yorkers release their inner howl. During Wild Things Week NYC (October 12–16),

Book Readings: The New York Public Library, where Catherine Keener, Forest Whitaker and Max Records will read the book aloud to fans of all ages. For kid-oriented interpretations of the story, head over to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan on October 12 or the Brooklyn Children’s Museum October 10–18 for interactive readings of the book—with the kids playing the part of the Wild Things.

Wild Things for Adults:

Nostalgic adults can view Maurice Sendak’s original artwork at the Morgan Library & Museum from October 6 through November 1. The exhibition presents early drafts of Where the Wild Things Are, along with manuscript pages and a preliminary sketch of the book’s cover. Then head over to the Museum of Modern Art for Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years, the first retrospective of the director’s work. The series, running October 8–18, will take viewers through the director’s stylistically groundbreaking career, from his early work in skateboard videos, music videos and commercials through his two previous feature films: Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. Jonze—whom Maurice Sendak describes as “a meshuggener…but dramatically gifted”—will introduce the opening-night screening himself.
